Cool, no rush guys. Just whenever you do get the chance let me know what you think! It dead ends and only takes a few minutes to get to that point. But the basic idea that I was going for is there. Maybe if I can get sound to work and figure out why the avi file throws up an error message I might continue working on it Smile

Roger, Juanjo, the game is short (it is not finished after all). It would be great if you, or someone else, could have a look at the game in the next few weeks Wink
After all, it is one purpose of the collective to stimulate creativity and talk on these forums!

Josiah I have checked your video and audio files, and I think that the files are too large and lack of a more modern compression.
For example, the videos are in (uncompressed?) AVI, with 15 frames/sec, 800x600 resolution. It is possible that it causes issues to adventure maker.

What I would suggest is to use a free video compression software such as Virtualdub (x64 version).
Open your video in the software, set the Video/Compression settings to Microsoft Video 1, then Video/Framerate to 25 frames/sec, and make sure you let the Video menu to full processing mode.
Then set the Audio menu to full processing mode too. Change the Audio/Compression to Microsoft ADPCM 22k stereo.
You're ready to export: File/Save As Avi.... and that should just work properly on most PCs!

Regarding the audio files, you can use a free easy software such as Audacity to open your existing files, and export them again to proper Wav files (or Mp3, or whatever), which will be compatibile with all Windows versions.

Good luck!

Great!

I don't know if you followed everything that was said before. Just so you know:

This game is a work in progress, made several years before by an amateur developeur, Josiah (a follower of the Icehouse), who used to create it for the fun. It was made with an "old" engine, Adventure Maker. It is still unfinished and Josiah seems to be motivated to continue his project depending on our feedback.
The game ends when you reach the caves with the green crystals.

Ok, I just played!

First off I must to say that the concept is really nice, I love it!

For a one person and for the AM it's good game, great work Josiah!!

Unfortunately as you said also for me the sound doesn't work and I see the video error so I can't finish the game... Sad

This game remember me my first steps in AM and in the world of development! Great times, of course.

Thanks Josiah for share with us and congrats for the work!

PS: I have Windows 10 64-bit.

Probably the game doesn't work on Win7 then. Too bad, but we can try to support Josiah to improve the compatibility, if he plans to continue his game.

Regarding the game itself, I must say that the concept is different of what we usually see in first person adventures. The fact that some items unlock only after visiting another scene, it is interesting and unusual (I think. Are there other games like that?). I don't know if it can be the best thing to do in the whole game, but from time to time it's nice.

Thanks Simon and Juanjo for the feedback, glad you guys like what little bit of it there is Smile The reason for the odd concept was because I had already made those rendered scenes and objects when I was learning how to use Bryce, Adobe Photoshop, and SketchUp. When I discovered Adventure Maker I wanted to put something together! I decided to use those and incorporate them into it! Not knowing it well, just figuring out how to use variables and no puzzles, I came up with a little bit of a mystery story that could lead to something more. I have a good story in mind!

Now some good news for you guys and anyone else who can't play it or can only play it with no audio. I recorded a video of me playing it on my old xp laptop! Unfortunately due to the old laptops cpu, gpu, and ram. The recording is laggy/choppy/jumpy. You can't expect much from an 11 yr old laptop :/ But I'll be happy for you guys to see AND hear it as close as possible to what it was originally Smile

Anyway, download it and watch it!

OK!

Finally got in gear and downloaded the video (it is much better quality than you think Josiah - I have seen much worse!), so downloaded and played the game.

Graphics are brilliant - love the image style and colour
Game style - interesting, it would be nice to have more time to wander around and see more in each level

If this was the first "mess around" that you did, then you are missing a vocation? I could not get anywhere near what you have achieved.

Stick with it. take the imagery and expand it, rebuild the sound (which was quirky and nice!), put it in an updated version of the engine, and see what happens (hope you don't have a real job and can find the time). I would like to see more levels, with some possibly being dead-ends or traps, so that you have to find your way back in order to go forward (that is just me being my usual perverse self!)

Believe Achieve!

Thanks soooo much guys! I really appreciate it Smile I definitely feel motivated to do something more with it. I don't have a lot of free time but maybe in the coming weeks I'll have a little more to share.

You guys keep up the great work, still very much excited to see more of the wonderful projects!

We all know that it's hard for everyone to stay motivated by a project and to finish it when you work on your own. That's why we're here, why we created the collective and opened these forums!
Keep us updated about your project, and most important: have fun! Wink
