Catyph giveaway

Post by Simon_Icehouse on 11th April 2017, 15:19

My game Catyph has been released on May 2016. It's been almost 1 year already!! Time is going so fast Surprised

To celebrate this event, I will offer 30 Steam keys of the game on IndieDB!
http://www.indiedb.com/giveaways/catyph-the-kunci-experiment
(in prepare)

Don't miss this opportunity to get it for free, even if you have never played ASA before!
Catyph is not a direct sequel and you can discover the 2 games separately.

In case you didn't participate in time, you'll still have a chance to get Catyph for a lower price: I will run a sale in May on Steam, and both ASA and Catyph will be at a much lower price during 1 week.

Stay tuned!

Awesome, that's very kind of you Simon! I for one, as you know, own it and loved it! You should maybe post a message at adventuregamers and adventuremaker. I'm sure there are some folks there that would love to give it a go Smile Spread the Black Cube goodness!

Oh I will, don't worry Smile Yesterday I was waiting for the giveaway to be accepted by IndieDB. The page was not officially online. Now it's good to go Smile

I never know if these giveaways are a good idea. It's certainly nice for new people to discover the game, but on the other hand it's quite unfair for the people like you who bought the game at the usual price. Unfortunately it would seem that the current indie game market mainly relies on special offers and giveaways, bundles and sales, etc.

Josh I'll try to find a way to thank you for your support. Would you like to receive an early access of Boïnihi for example? It's a good way to receive the game for free, and will allow me to receive some feedback before the release.
Well if you are interested I'll ask you to be patient, you'll have to wait for a beta version to be ready Smile

Well I am one who paid full price for Catyph and ASA Remastered. And I'm glad I did. That way you got something back for all your hard work. I plan to pay for Boinihi as well Smile As for the early access invite I think I will have to pass. I do appreciate the offer though. I would rather wait and play it in its finished and polished glory Smile

Your help is very apreciated Josiah. I think it's important that people buy their games at the normal "release" price, even if it seems expensive sometimes.
Globally, the best support that small indie devs can receive is when people buy their games, and when people spread the word about them. And encouragements are welcome too Smile Exactly what you're doing!

I'd be happy to make you a small present someday if I have an idea. For example, did I send you some videos of my watercolor paintings by email? (the ones than are normally private and Patreon-only)
If you're interested in the behind-the-scenes, it could be a way to thank you for your support.

By the way, you said that you discovered the work of Juanjo, Simona/Similia and I on the forums of Adventure Maker. Are you by chance a game developer? (even amateur, or hobby is always making us curious and i personally like to stimulate creativity, so... I'd be happy to learn more about your past projects, if any!)

I stumbled upon Adventure Maker back in 2005ish and fooled around with it a bit, during that time I had created a short myst style game but unfortunately it only works on Windows XP. If you or anyone else here has access to Windows XP I'd be more than happy to upload it for download. But anyway, I only recently got back into gaming in the past couple of years after a long hiatus. I've been toying with the idea to maybe try out Unity. It just seems a bit overwhelming compared to Adventure Maker though.

Oh yes Unity is much more complicated to learn... I would already use it if it was that easy. However I don't want to discourage you, it's really a fantastic engine and allows to create all kinds of things! If I had the time I would learn it asap!

I'd be happy to see your Myst game but I don't have XP anymore Sad
Can't you do a new export from AM with the last version? Oh maybe you don't have the work folder anymore.

Yes that could be a possibility, indeed.
Josiah, do you know why the game only works on XP? Did you use an old version of AM?

I used version 4.5.2 when I created it, XP was the latest system compatible. And yes I do have the original project folder saved on a couple of flash drives! I've been doing some tweaking/fixing and was able to get 4.5.2 to work in windows 10 64bit! But unfortunately audio doesn't work :/ Not sure why?! I am able to compile the game though!!!
I also have version 4.6.1 which will also run with some tweaking/fixing. Of course AM gives the warning that my project was created in an older version and may not work, but it does work and the audio works! The unfortunate problem though is when I try to compile it errors pop up and it will not compile Sad I'll keep working at it! Maybe I can bring the older versions of AM back with my own reverse engineering Wink As for the last version 4.7.1 I don't have it and there is no way to buy it. It would probably solve all my problems!

Where Audio is concerned it is probably an "old" codec issue. I would not be at all surprised if you were able to load the original files into a more recent version of AM, that you would be able to convert/update the files and get it to be fully compatable.

There again I am well known for unfounded optimism!

I think you could try to share your Myst-like game with us, Josiah, if you feel like it, and some of us might be happy to try and see if it works on their pc? I'd personnally be curious to play it and discover a "new" AM game. I'm usually not judging graphics and the skills of the developer, as I prefer to encourage, stimulate the creativity and see people ideas. This is why the Icehouse exits when you think of it, so don't be afraid to show us your game Wink If it doesn't work, that's another problem but we may find solutions together?

Still no luck with the sound issue, once the game is compiled and installed it throws up mediaobject errors. I'll just turn off the music and recompile it. That way you guys can at least get a taste of it. Give me a day or 2 and I'll upload it.

Here's the link to the game. The sound doesn't work in Windows 10 64-bit at least not for me and there is an avi video that will throw up an error message but you can click ok to continue. If you would like to see the animation video it is in the frames folder. Let me know if sound works for anyone. It works in WinXP. I haven't tested any other OS' It's a shame you guys can't experience it the way it was meant to be but I guess this is better than nothing :/

What site would you recommend? I don't do much uploading so I just have a regular account at 4shared, reason for the ad pop ups. It's 75MB so too big to attach in an email.

I'm usually using my personal website as a hosting place.
Or Google Drive. It comes for free with gmail account.

The best other option I know is dropbox:

I use both Google Drive (mainly for personal shares) and Dropbox (for College work). Both are easy to use, free, and have plenty of space

You can get a standard URL and share it like any other file (without our email). When you choose the file privacy (public or not) there should be a web address. Make sure that people with the link can access the file, then share the link with us Smile

It worked! I could download the game and play it. No particular problem, except that there is no sound and there was an error when opening the chrome ball (as you said). The rest is working well and it's quite an interesting game, different of the usual adventures I played so far.

Everything is so strange and made me curious to see more. Couldn't play during a long time however. For today I'm stuck at the green crystals (I clicked all of them with no result, I must have missed a clue). Will try to continue soon!

Thanks for sharing your game Josiah, I recommend to everyone around to give it a try if they like Myst games.

Thanks Simon, that means a lot coming from you! Unfortunately the cave is a dead end. I wasn't able to implement the puzzle for that part before I stopped working on it. I'm hoping to figure out the sound issue and get back to working on it again Smile
