Boïnihi: the K'i Codex [Simon]

Post by Simon_Icehouse on 31st March 2017, 15:21

Hi everyone,
As announced yesterday for the 3rd Icehouse Birthday, I'm currently working on a new (short) game in the Black Cube series alien

Game Homepage:
http://www.theblackcube.fr/boinihi

Project history:
As explained on the official page of the game, after the release of Catyph in May 2016, I had decided to stop working on ambitious Myst games on my own, and thus for an indefinite period. I explained it in a long message to my followers (simply, I was exhausted). However I had left a door opened, and I said that I would sometimes work on shorter games in the Myst genre, for the fun. Just like I did in the past during the Myst Game Jam, which gave birth to Myha last year.
That is how I came to create Boïnihi: The K'I Codex. I took one month to create this 4th ASA-like in this series. Shorter, easier than the previous games, yet challenging enough and exotic: discover a new journey in a far away land!

The game:
Boïnihi is a First Person Adventure (ASA-like, or Myst-like) in 2D point and click (pre-rendered 3D) where you play in 360° panoramic views. It is being made with my usual tools (3dsmax and After Effects) and engine (Adventure Maker), but I wanted to take this opportunity to learn new techniques too, in order to slowly migrate to realtime 3D in the future. That is why some of the models in the game backgrounds could appear in lowpoly sometimes, even if I will try to make it not visible.

Story:
In 2062, the people of Terra discovered the Blue Matter System. With the help of this new technology, they decided to explore the galaxy in search for signs of intelligent life... One of these astronauts has been wandering through space during 4 years, and finally landed on a moon with no name, where a mysterious man used to live alone. Boïnihi was his name, and he was a solitary Talifan who had luckily survived to the terrible events of Day Zero, long, long ago...

Will you be able to translate the mysterious K'i manuscript?  study

Key features:

  • 4 different regions to explore, inspired by Asian countries and mythologies
  • prerendered 3D graphics (2D, point and click) with 360° views
  • 3+ hours of gameplay
  • an original soundtrack by Yazorius
  • the story of a Talifan survivor, who lived the events of 'Day 0' (see Anterran)
  • a mysterious K'i codex to translate, inspired by the famous Voynich manuscript
  • most pages of the codex, font and illustrations were created by hand with pencils and watercolor
  • challenging logical puzzles, yet easier of access than my previous games in the series

Dev Team:
I will develop the game on my own as Simon Says: Play!.
Our Friend Yaz, who enjoyed my other Black Cube games, will work on the soundtrack.

Great work Simon ! Without him, I'd never composed the music : it's really wonderful and an honor to add a little personal stone in the huge cathedral structure of a BlackCube game ! ^_^

Hey Simon, This definitely has me excited. I was worried I'd never get to experience another Myst style game from you. So you can imagine my surprise when I read the article at Adventuregamers. Long live the Black Cube! Excellent work Simon and Yaz keep it up! Smile

Many thanks Josiah!

It is true that I had not planned to create a new Myst-like game before a long while (which I even explained on Adventure Gamers in the thread of Catyph), but on the other hand I'm interested in short projects like Game Jams, or time-limited productions. They're like short challenges that allow me to concretise new ideas, learn new tools, and share them with my followers to receive some feedback.

Myha was fun to develop for these very reasons, and Boïnihi is too! I'm just a little worried that it is going to take more time to create it than expected, because I have included more features. The codex takes time to prepare (texts, localization, etc), and I also start to discover that I will need time to render the in-game movies (opening and ending at least). That's very important for me to include narrative elements such as movies and cutscenes: according to me they can make a huge difference in the feeling of immersion. We'll see what I can do.

I'll keep you updated here of my progress as soon as I have new things to show. Oh by the way there are these 4 screenshots that were revealed on AG. I attach them below.
Ok, back to work!

Slowly... I was sick yesterday, I didn't work. As a result, the animated cutscenes didn't render last night, so I'm getting even more late on my plannings..........
It's ok, it won't change the game quality, but instead of 1 month of development it may take 2. We'll see!

Most important is the quality of the blur in the corners Wink I'm glad you like it. Indeed Roger I simply put my fingers on the lens. Easy!

I'd be happy to show you something new. Maybe today I can share a screenshot from the opening movie? I'll try.

By the way, French website Planète Aventure talked of our 3 games:

Enjoy!

The picture is a bit blurry because of motion blur. I think it will be better with the animations. I hope.

It's Juanjo who created the new logo of the CSE! He has created 3 new logos for Blue Moon (Juanjo maybe you could reveal them soon in public?)

The building of the CSE is more or less a copy of the building of the Kennedy Space Center. With this, I hope it makes it clear that the CSE of Terra is an equivalent to NASA Smile

But you can see the logos better in future images.
